    3. Read this in Nairobi last week A little surreal reading Orkney stories in sub Saharan Africa but strangely comforting I particularly enjoyed the story about the writer and his search for inspiration Also the stories that talked about the process of poetry writing GMB seemed to be passing on his craft If only I could write as beautifully I also enjoyed the intertextual biblical references.

    4. These stories remind me of Alan Garner s work rooted in a loved place and drawing heavily on local custom and mythology Mackay Brown isn t as accomplished as Garner, but it s a worthwhile read, especially if you have been to Orkney The stories are short enough to make good bedtime reading.
