There are many recurring symbols in this book the sphinx, the forest, Undine, Melusine, nymphs, Eden, bells, vaults, windows, hearths, Maya, winds, seas and most persistently, the rose, which at one stage is blue These symbols come and go like notes in a long piece of music I m not precisely sure what they all mean, or even if they all have a meaning in the usual sense But they are beautiful, and Brennan is one of my favourite poets now.
