    2. Gah this book made me cry I loved the setting and characters soooo much I honestly am not knowledgeable about the history during 13th century and having to do with Mongol Empire but this book led me to google Plus, I really enjoyed reading the author s notes TBatB is really beautifully written, fast paced and tense Some of the language used is a bit modern but I loved this aspect because it helped me relate to the characters as well as had me laughing at parts The characters are funny, flawed an [...]

    3. Okay let me explain about about the DNF status This book was by no means bad The writing was totally riveting, the first person POV narrative from Jinghua was intriguing, and the research is really well done Like, I read 15% into the book and have to commend the author on her knowledge about the Song Yuan dynasty, and her placement of the Chinese songs and phrases Yay I was SO into it when I stopped The story jumps immediately into action with Jinghua witnessing her love, Prince Khalaf, voluntee [...]

    6. I just finished this book last night, and I m still not entirely sure how I feel about it A few things were clear though, Bannen is talented The prose is beautiful The characters are great I definitely have a new book boyfriend in Khalaf, who is one of the sweetest most intelligent love interests I ve seen in a long time The main character, Jinghua is interesting and is even so by the end But the one who steals the show is Khalaf s cantankerous father, Timur In a book with such serious conseque [...]

    7. 5 stars for The Bird and the Blade This book wrecked me It is a bit hard to put in words how I feel having just finished it I think I can say it is the same as watching your dog get run over while winning the lottery Megan Bannen is a very talented storyteller I was not familiar with the story of Prince Khalaf and the Princess of China but from the author s closing statement I understand that this is a retelling of that story from the view of the princess slave Even without having read the origi [...]

    8. I shed a few tears, and I HOPE YOU DO TOO, because this was just really really well written and a great story.Setting Mongol Empire, 13th centuryJinghua is a slave, invisible and unseen to the Khan s family that she serves That is, until Prince Khalaf returns home and gives her reason to believe he alone has the power and wisdom to one day rule When the Prince and his father, Timur Khan, lose their army home family to enemy forces, Jinghua makes a last attempt to control her fate by following an [...]

    9. I was lucky enough to read an ARC of this, and I could not put it down There were twists I didn t see coming, gorgeous writing, characters I fell in love with even the old goat and I was so fully invested in the end that I cried I NEVER cry while reading This was such a fully satisfying story that elicited so many emotions it was beautifully romantic, compelling, but also hilarious at times I can t recommend it enough such a great read.

    10. First the cover beautiful Totally love it And love the title, too so perfect As for the book I loved it, too I was a little unsure at first, since I knew next to nothing about the Mongol Empire, but the author did a great job of world building without making readers feel like they were receiving a history lesson I feel like I really learned something, without being lectured to, which I always appreciate in a book Just about the time I started thinking, enough setting up I want to know the charac [...]

    11. I received an e ARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review Review can be found on Milky Way of Books There are many things to love in History You get to see battles, inventions, even sometimes the stupidity in the human race but you also get to have the chance of re writing History into a freaking amazing book The Bird and the Blade takes place in the 13th century The West lives into the Dark Ages, the Byzantine Empire is just a smidge of its former glory and the Mongols struggle for po [...]

    12. First of all, I loooove the cover So beautiful I went into this book not knowing it s a retelling of the opera Turandot and the story upon which the opera is based, Prince Khalaf and the Princess of China from the princess s point of view that was probably a good thing, because if I d known that, I might not have finished it, considering how that story turns out I need HAPPY ENDINGS, Y ALL Anyway, this book is great But now I need to go read a fluffy romcom or something, because I am emotionally [...]

    15. The two compares on EW THE WINNER S CURSE and THE WRATH AND THE DAWN are huge favorites for me, so that made me want to pick this up immediately, but it sounds messy and triangle y in a way I m not sure I can handle Someone read this and give me info

    16. Luckily I got the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The Bird and the Blade, otherwise I might have missed this unforgettable story that s not usually my cup of tea When I started reading and realized it was set in the Mongol Empire, I was honestly a little skeptical of whether I d enjoy it But that soon faded The articulately drawn characters quickly captured my attention, and the raw plight of the main girl soon engaged my heart I m not sure whether it s the vulnerable first person view, [...]

    17. Edit I got approved for it YES YallThis is what I wrote when I requested this on Edelweiss I would love to read this since this remain me of the Opera Turandot by Puccini Even tho I really wasn t fond of the Opera cause I felt like Turandot got off easy and didn t really learn what a true bitch she was because of her actions Also I did feel like the slave girl did get the sort end of the stick cause she stuck by the prince for so long while he was too busy trying to woo Turandot So I am interest [...]

    18. As a Mongol slave, Jinghua wants nothing than to escape her captivity, and return to her home in Li nan, to mourn her brother, and honor her ancestors Forced to flee with the Khan and his son, she must confront a great deal than slavery by finding who she wants to be and how to best live in the world, in order to save the ones she loves.I found this story to be fantastic A high stakes re imagining of Puccini s Turandot Bannen s execution of a complicated story is nothing short of operatic dram [...]

    19. Megan Bannen is definitely an author to follow The humor, heart and characters in this book are wonderful, and the writing is stunning The book has an unusual structure, but all that works to heighten the reader s anticipation.Although my read dates are a few weeks apart, the actual read time was just a few days When I got to the halfway point, I told my husband I couldn t do anything else until I d finished and I spent a lovely Sunday reading this beautiful book And when I was done, I was so in [...]

    20. THIS BOOK Is so good It s lush, gritty, sexy, scary, and completely immersive It s an adaptation of Turandot, a story I wasn t familiar with, and it has that epic feeling of living reading through a legend while also feeling completely fresh and unique The Mongolian setting, just a few generations after Genghis Khan, is fascinatingly rendered, with enormous detail and scope The time skipping structure keeps the pacing heart pounding and the characters are never cliche, and often very funny looki [...]
