    1. A simple folk tale is shared here about a wife and child who waited for the return of their husband and father As time passed without his return, the wife cried out to the gods and was changed into stone There the original story ends, but the author of this version was not satisfied with this, and adds a tidy happily ever after I m glad this story has now been shared with a wider audience.

    2. a beautiful story, based on a real rock formation the author knew and loved as a child in Hong Kong The hapy ending of the book of course didn t happen in real life, because the rock is till there, but it s a lovely ending It s a pleasure to read and look at an excellent one for widening a young chid s reading horizens

    3. Based on a Chinese folk tale, and beautifully illustrated with ethereal images and quiet colors by Pirkko Vainio, Natasha Yim s the Rock Maiden blends human tragedy and fairytale into a smooth and pleasing children s story Some lovely verbal images add depth and subtlety as Hong Kong s fishing history comes to life Well chosen colors evoke just the right emotions And the re imagined ending to the story, while perhaps a little Hollywood and predictable, will leave young readers believing in love, [...]

    6. A Chinese Legend RetoldThere is large granite rock formation near Hong Kong known as the Amah Rock, shaped like a woman with a baby on her back This natural rock formation overlooks the sea and is often visited by both residents and tourists Chinese legend has it that the Amah Rock was formed when a young woman grieved over the loss of her fisherman husband at sea and climbed the hill every day to search for his return The Goddess Tin Hau pitied the young woman and turned her and the baby into s [...]

    7. This book is a retelling of an old Chinese tale based upon a real rock called the Amah Rock in Sha Tin, Hong Kong In the real legend, the story is not as happily ended This telling is much sweeter and gives hope, but it also shares love and loyalty. The tale also introduces a Goddess of the Heavens called Tin Hau, this is nice to illustrate that children around the world do not necessarily worship the same God At the very least, it can bring the conversation about others and their beliefs that ma [...]

    8. This is a very nice retelling of a Chinese folktale that was inspired by a rock formation in Hong Kong that resembles a mother and child I like the use evocative language in this book When there is a big storm at sea, the story says The sea beat its angry fists upon the shore The illustrations are lovely and suit the story.

The Rock Maiden is an old Hong Kong legend, modified for ages 4 up The text tells a compelling, sweet story about the love and loyalty of a husband and wife The legend was modified to provide us with a happy ending The illustrations have the look of watercolors and are lovely They illustrate the text but also fill out the story by showing details about village life This makes it feel like a true tale I enjoyed studying these illustrations Overall, I d recommend this juvenile fiction book.I recei [...]

    11. Nice book As I age, though, it s tough to read faithful wife stories as much than propaganda Sure, at that time and in that culture, it was probably hard to get on with life as a single mom, but you can t just mourn until you turn to stone these days.

    12. A long time ago off the coast of China there was a young woman named Ling Yee who fell in love with a fisherman named Ching Yin They were married and had a baby One stormy night Ching Yin did not return Day into night Ling Yee stood at the top of a cliff overlooking the ocean with her baby on her back She prayed to Tin Hau, the goddess of fisherman, who then took pity on her and turned her into stone on the cliff Tin Hau did this so that Ling Yee would no longer mourn Would her beloved Ching Yin [...]
