    2. Dancing Backwards in Paradise is the story of Grace Place, a young lady living in small town Hixson, Tennessee and who is quickly learning the ways of the world Being from a small town in Tennessee I was immediately interested in reading this book I am a big fan of southern fiction and I had a feeling this book would be something I would enjoy.Initially I found Grace Place to be abrasive andwell.a little embarrassing I found her to be the cliched dumb southerner that I really dislike as a charac [...]

    3. I absolutely fell in love with Grace Place and her adventures in this book that delivers a wonderful tale of hope, love, and everyday chaos This book is set in the 1960 s but the way the story was told is ageless I will read this book again when I want a laugh, a peek of wonderful imagery, and some wonderful dialogue Vera Jane Cook will be an author I will look forward to future books from My eyes just about popped out of my head at the statement, I always considered Lenny to be the taker of my [...]

    4. I really didn t think I was going to like this book I initally thought Grace was really crass and couldn t imagine caring enough about her to finish However, somehow, I whipped right through this story and, by the end, really appreciated how much Grace had grown up If you offend easily, this is not the book for you but if you can take a little crude, you may find yourself pleasantly suprised.I received this book in a giveaway.

    5. I read Vera Jane Cook s first book Dancing Backward In Paradise I loved it, she made me laugh and cry Plus the story was engaging and interesting with quirky funny characters I literally laughed out loud One of the things I really love about this writer is her lyrical sensibility She not only tells a great story, but she makes it so beautiful to read I have to stop and reread many passages as they are so lovely.

    8. One of the benefits of exploring is the opportunity to try out books you might not otherwise consider if left to your own book shopping habits This is how I came across Dancing Backward in Paradise Like the book s protagonist Grace, I often find myself itching to try the back roads of life, or in this case, literature Plus, with Southern heritage from my mother, I m especially inclined to give Dixieland yarns a chance Dancing Backward in Paradise follows the eccentric journey of Grace Place, a r [...]

    9. I have had the pleasure to have read multiple novels by Vera Jane Cook and none of let me down I love that this one was a little on the edgy side than others that I have read before Thre is language and some sexuality in this story, but it was not added by the author for the fun if it The story of how a young girl grows up and what she goes through would not have been complete without all of the negative moments and the connatations I applaud the author for being brave and stepping out of the b [...]

    10. Full review on my blogIn the first half of the book we know this southern place and their inhabitants Grace s family live in a trailer, and people in Paradise are hard workers but they have very little culture We have to take into account that we are in the sixties in a little village, so everybody is aware of others affairs and things like homosexuality are not well considered Grace has a friend who is a lesbian and is always in trouble The atmosphere of that place is really well described thro [...]

    11. This book did a full 180 on me It started out very rough for me, a lot of swearing, a lot of sex But then it started growing on me and I ended up loving it You really did have to get into the characters in order to like it And that is exactly what Vera did She is an excellent character builder.I started out not really liking any of the characters, even the main character Grace But I ended up loving her She started out as poor white southern trash and ended up a sweetheart Vera does that with her [...]

    14. When i was first asked to read the book, i wasnt sure that i would understand the literature, with it being set in the Southern parts of USA but after reading the first few pages i was hooked Grace Place was bought up in a trailer park by her parents and abusive grandfather She is content with her life with Lenny and happy when they get engaged, but is it real is Lenny really in love with her Her mother has dreams of moving to New york, but it never happened to her so she pushes her dreams on to [...]

    15. Similar to Sarah s comments, I was a bit skeptical at first It definitely isn t my favorite book But the voices were well written, in a crass southern kind of way.
