    1. Amazing pictures And a great way to generate awareness for animals going extinct There needs to be so much done for these animals before they are gone.

    2. What a gorgeous volume of photographs, all closeups of animals, insects, birds, set against black backgrounds A rating is shown for each animal, which illustrates it s place on the continuum of extinction, from Extinct, to Least Concern. In his introduction to this collection, actor Harrison Ford states Joel Sartore s Photo Ark focuses a lens on the individual thread in nature s tapestry. The importance of works like Joel s is that it reminds us to care about those individual threads His subjects [...]

The following review is based off my own opinions, thoughts and reactions So in other words brace yourself There may be inappropriate words such as curse words You have been advised in advance So I have been thinking of how I wanted to kick this review off and I mean, I could just gush over animals or going into a lecture about everything thing this book stands for, but I think I m just going to jump into explaining how this book, THIS right here is the crown jewel of my book collection I m a HU [...]

    4. This book contains gorgeous full page photographs of about 400 animals, both invertebrate and vertebrate The photographer has each posed against an all white or black background so as not to detract from the impact that these beautifully coloured pictures have on the viewer So far the photographer, Joel Sartore, has collected 6 000 photos of an estimated 12,000 species for over a decade, and hopes to devote his life to photographing the remaining 6,000 Such photos have been archived by the Natio [...]

    9. This is a collection of some of the photos of the world s animals as taken by Joel Sartore Sartore s goal is to take a photograph of every species of animal under human care So far he has photographed about half of them over 6,000 and about 400 are featured in the book This project is sponsored by National Geographic, and the goal of the project is to highlight the alarming rate at which humankind is diminishing, and damaging, the unique biodiversity of Earth Because of the immensity of the proje [...]

    10. First of all, if anyone wants to buy The Photo Ark for me as a Christmas present, I will gladly accept I need, yes need, than one glance at the creatures, great and small, photographed by Joel Sartore, National Geographic photographer and founder of The Photo Ark Beautifully stark and realistic, this bound treasure is graced with animals that literally stare into your eyes The 400 photos are studio style animal portraits, and I sometimes laughed, reveled in curiosity, and stared in awe at the a [...]

    11. Absolutely gorgeous coffee table book with astoundingly colorful and detailed photographs of all kinds of animals, reptiles, birds and other fauna The photographer is trying to photograph one of every single different species on the planet he s done 6,000 so far which he estimates may take him 25 years to do He travels to zoos and parks around the world and sets up his equipment where the animals are, putting small tamer animals inside a softsided booth and for others converting their stall or p [...]

    12. Extremely well done Sensitive, accessible, relatable I appreciated the conceit of this book, which is to do studio portraits of animals, to draw out their personalities and treat them as individuals The book is thus organized not taxonomically or geographically, but in a few different ways that put the animal first The design is thoughtful, balancing the serious content endangered animals with playfulness putting a cat and mouse on the same spread, pairing a leopard with a thumb sized leopard sp [...]

    13. Joel Sartore has set out to photograph as many species of animals as he can in a 25 year period and develop an ark of photographic evidence of animals, many of which are on the brink of extinction This book is just the first sharing of photos he has done so far Included are a few essays on the need for better care of the planet, biodiversity, and its inhabitants, as well as highlights of people or groups who are working hard to save animals so that future generations can also enjoy them as livin [...]

    14. Fascinating book photos show animals against a black or white background, mostly with no idea of scale, but beautifully clear A few tiny animals shown on a person s hand or finger Animals are chosen among those held in zoos or rescue operations Some behind the scenes stories and photos of how the operation was conducted, speaking about some specific animals Many animals I m familiar with like tigers, leopards, mountain goat, jaguarundi, etc but many that I ve never even heard of All fascinating, [...]

    15. Beautiful photographs of amazing animals Checked this out from the library after seeing Sartore s exhibit at the National Museum of Wildlife Art Encountering these creatures in large format portraits was an experience I won t soon forget Looking through this book is the next best thing Who can view these beings and not feel a vital connection The cat and primate photos are especially striking, but they are all amazing Shared this with both my two year old nephew and seventy two year old mother I [...]

    16. Absolutely phenomenal book I have enjoyed sharing this with my first and second grade classrooms, as they are all in various stages of animal research They are enthralled, and can t get enough of these amazing photographs My only complaint is that the index is LOUSY For such a large book, nearly 400 pages, it is essential to be able to easily look up an animal This index is not in alphabetical order, but rather in page order So if I want to find that cool picture of the geckos licking their eyeb [...]

    17. 18. Gorgeous Absolutely gorgeous If this book has left you yearning for the stories of these beautiful creatures, there s a book by Douglas Adams yup, that Douglas Adams HG2G , called Last Chance to See I highly recommend it as a follow up for those wanting to read about our other kin on this planet It s not a picture book, but if you re not familiar with Adams turn of phrase you owe it to yourself to read it.

    19. Amazing Some animals naturally look angry and some naturally look as though they re smiling for the camera and he really did get some great expressions on a few very interesting creatures Not only do I think this is a must have for anyone with kids, I also think it is a must read for all humans It would be a fantastic gesture for National Geographic to make sure that every school library has a copy for kids to browse and get excited about travel, photography, animals and research.
