    1. i read this in 2 sittings, attached to the familiarity of it like it was me, like these were my friends the wildness and uncertainty, the gaps in time and perceived stability, the leaning in and out of love and vulnerability, the defining and redefining of ourselves through shared memory and experience all is represented here truly relatable in tragically pleasant, honest, and hilarious ways.

    2. This was by far one of the best books I have read in a long long time It tells the story of a 20 something year old man named Mike, living out his youth in post 9 11 America The chapters are vignettes of his life, offering a new story within each and a new side to his character and his growth This story shows many sides to life, work, love, violence, addiction, friendship, and everything that encompasses being young and ambitious It is inspiring and uplifting and well, well worth the read.

    3. Some of the cleanest, freshest descriptions I ve read just for a random example, A snowplow went by in a cloud of silted exhaust that stained the snowbanks brown We watched its orange and yellow lights flicker as it dropped the blade with a harsh metal scrape, before gathering, and running cleanly along the snow again And a great title But in the end it doesn t get any better than that. The narrative voice suffers from terminal, millennial coolness The book itself proves to be the the solution to [...]

    4. 3.5 stars slow at times, and a not very likable protagonist but good language, and a few stand out moments of heartbreak or triumph.

    5. This novel is intriguing and enthralling Not for someone who isn t a fan of muddled writing, though There was no set plotline, climax or theme, and the ending had no closure, but I enjoyed the freeform and the curiosity I was left with It truly is like a disorganized mixtape of unreliable memories, but there s a lot to learn nonetheless.Younger generational tendencies are interesting indeed Such as the crushing cynicism and constant existential crises of millennials with unwavering hopes and dre [...]

    6. Although Mike Roberts is writing about being a twentysomething read hipster read millennial hipster in a time period 2001 2010 or thereabouts that I m a tad too young to connect with directly, there s something so immediate in the depleted, ethereal emotions of Cannibals in Love I fell for it immediately, falling for both the milieu of its characters the bands forged in these pages sound awfully familiar and for the stack of polaroids cum mixtape that the narrator author describes the book s str [...]

    7. While there were moments stories I loved, there were also moments that felt tremendously unnecessary self indulgent The way Roberts captures the millennial malaise is one that resonated with me and maybe that s why I didn t love the book hitting too close to home but maybe it s just because I ve read these stories before I can read what I ve lived, in fact sometimes that s a really nice thing, but Roberts too often didn t do anything new with his tales And when he did, it was enough to make me a [...]

    8. Chapter by chapter this book felt all over the place but looking at it as a whole it fell into place Modern day, quick story that was a nice break between some of the heavier historical fiction I usually read I enjoyed this new author I would rate it a 3.8 if allowed but rounded up to a 4.

    9. Really a 4.5 I loved a couple stories and thought they were perfect while a couple of others were just alright Plus, I loved both the DC and Austin settings.

    10. While I appreciated what the author was going for, this book felt a little unfocused I can deal with plotless novels if I m hanging around with characters I like, but the main character was just kind of a d bag who manages to sleep with lots of women while not being able to hold down a job Also, I m assuming this is a memoir, but it never explicitly states it The whole thing felt a little muddled and under realized.

    11. DNF at page 102.I can confidently say that I gave this novel an adequate amount of pages to impress me, but I ultimately found that this wasn t the book for me.I was not interested in the characters, as the times were always changing from each chapter to the next I never read about the same characters twice, which really annoyed me I really wanted to like this novel because of Mike s adaptation of Goat I thought the writing for that film was fantastic, but I am just going to blame the narrative [...]

    12. I m stealing Emma s comment about this book being like Catcher In The Rye Starts out a lot like Holden Caulfield Has a little heart than Salinger s works, a lot feels Fully realizes what life was like between 2001 2006 Attempts to read like a mixtape or a series of short stories, but really just felt like a well hashed memoir as novel it is called A Novel anyway Thankfully a quick read, if it was too much longer I probably wouldn t have burnt through it so easily.

    13. Giving up on this because I lost momentum and I have a stack of angry TBRs looking at me It s probably a fine book.
