Planning to read heavily about the Vietnam War this fall, still trying to make sense of it all, I knew that a study of the antiwar movement in America would fill a gap in my understanding Carefully looking at a variety of books on the subject, I chose Tom Wells s The War Within Wanting something scholarly than not, I think I chose well Wells was active in the opposition to the war, and the insider perspective led him to begin the book as his PhD dissertation at Berkeley The scholarship is evide [...]

Whew this is one long book Took nearly a month to finish, and it felt like longer Not to say the book is bad It s not It s interesting and very detailed although some details are left out on that in a second It s just dense and, at times, repetitive and probably overly detailed I read this because I don t know much about this period in American history, and it s been sitting on my to read bookcase for years Wells paints a very thorough picture of the activists who protested the Vietnam War and [...]

I read this book because I read Todd Gitlin s Sixties book Taken together both books really show what went onIt is the anecdotes in Wells book that makes it so sobering to read Dysfunctional politics at its best both for those in the White House and those protesting the policiesAlong with this is the sectarian fights among the protestorsspersed with rampant drug use on side and alcohol over indulgence on the other sideFramed with this is the seeing the unhinging of minds of all these people invo [...]
