    1. Where I got the book audiobook on Audible.Authors who have a series are often advised to either make the first book in the series permanently free or to write one or short stories as giveaways to attract new readers to the series The fact that I found A Breach of Security free on Audible, and its seeming disconnectedness with the series as a whole, suggests the latter if I were Susan Hill I d certainly object to giving away the first book in the Serrailler series, as it s possibly the best one [...]

    2. Short yes, but absolutely packed with beautiful details and characterisation The opening is Hill at her very best, as is the ending.I read The Soul of Discretion yesterday and loved it, and this was another such story Susan Hill gets right to the heart of emotions without being over dramatic Perfect.I want Mu only complaint is that I now want to buy the paperbacks Edit 18.11.2015 Signed paperback of this, and the final Simon Serrailler novel purchased from Susan Hill s site Wonderful to have th [...]

    3. Banging headache so thought I d listen to a book for a change Great tension in an attack on a Pride parade by right wing activists while our main detective is watching a game of cricket Good contrast between two enjoyable pastimes and how reality can rush back in to lives after a moments pleasure. This is part of a longer series and there is enough here to leave me wanting to examine these books closely. The main thrust of this story is how little we can know about what we see each day at home, w [...]

    4. Audible freebie Again. And now it s enough. This one was Well, sub par Previous two free audiobooks were really unexpectedly good, even for free books This one, not so much I m done with free books. It started by discussing virtually all anti gay viewpoints Why do they march What are they so proud of Then it did a 180 and switched to a fiery defense Let them do whatever the want Live and let live.Dumbfounded, I had no idea WTF was going on Even where it was going on Narrator certainly didn t help a [...]

    5. This was a short story I got as a freebie audio download It involves characters I d not read about before but that apparently are part of a crime series that Susan Hill has written. The series involves Simon Serrallier, a detective in Laffterton police force Laffterton sounds a bit like Midsomer or St Mary Mead one of those small, genteel communities where a surprising number of murders happen.Anyway, despite this being about characters I was unfamiliar with, I managed to get into the story very [...]

    6. OK but nothing like as good as the rest of the Simon Serrailler series and how it fits into the series timewise is unclear.

    7. Disappointing and boring I tried very hard to get into this story but couldn t I listened to some of the chapters again hoping it would help but it didn t The story seemed predictable and I kept hoping that I would be wrong and there would be a twist, but there wasn t.Even the narration, which I thought was very good couldn t get me interested in this story or it s characters Even though I didn t like this audiobook, I hope to try Susan Hill other books to see if they are any better Not my type [...]

    8. I wanted to like this but I don t I chose it as it was a quick read and I d enjoyed previous books by Susan Hill I wasn t bothered about the characters and I wasn t gripped by the plot either The only reason I read it was to bring it to its conclusion Again, it left me luke warm.

    9. I honestly regret wasting my time with this freebie from Audible Flat characters and a convoluted plot made for a terrible listen The narrator didn t help, with his mostly monotone voice Would never recommend this to anyone.

    10. When I started this I expected that it was going to take place before the events in the latest novel, The Soul of Discretion however, when I began Book 8 it became clear that this Kindle short was set after events and has now shifted its place in the series to reflect this. While no date is given for the events in this Kindle Single Simon s nephew is sixteen where he was fifteen in The Soul of Discretion so likely takes place in the summer of 2014 However, this was a rare miss for me in this seri [...]

    11. I d actually place this story at 7.5 in the series though as others have said, the sequence is confusing when looking at the series as a whole I think the publisher means this to be 7.5 based on the advertisement at the end that provides a sneak peak at the next Simon Serrailler novel The Soul of Discretion I was disoriented reading this after Soul a lot happens in that novel that clearly hasn t happened yet with this almost stand alone Of course, I m sure I m over thinking this The story s okay [...]

    12. I read the Serrailler novels with pleasure I m so sorry to learn that the last book in the series has been published This story, however, was too long for its plot and therefore tedious Also, has Serrailler been written as a womanizer before I know he s unable to sustain a long term romantic relationship with a woman, but this story portrays him as being known to his sister as always on the lookout for someone new to seduce I felt as if the author had forgotten the personality she had establishe [...]

    13. Firstly, SO disappointed it was a short story I was expecting it to go on But very well written a good story nonetheless.

    14. Always a pleasure to spend time with Simon and Cat Interesting take on attacks within the country, be careful who you trust Poor Simon, disappointed again.

    15. This audiobook was mediocre at best It s a short story set within a larger series of novels It functions fine as a standalone I m not at all familiar with the series , but it s justnda boring Which is not good when your story is a mystery thriller about domestic terrorists threatening the Prince of Wales That should be interesting Plus the writing style is plain, predictable, and occasionally sprinkled with big fancy vocabulary words that just feel wildly out of place. Also, the mediocre story is [...]

    16. Thank goodness this was a novella only It was the bitterest disappointment I ve had from Susan Hill, and I ve no doubt I would have put it aside had it begun to take any of my time.

    18. I picked this ebook up thinking it was the new Simon Serrailler book It is a Simon Serrailler book that I hadn t read but it s just a short one, somewhere between a short story and a novella Oddly it seems to take place after The Soul of Discretion which is the book I was after maybe not odd it was published later, it s just that has this down as before it in the series It packs a lot in but as usual with short stories I end up wishing the author had padded it out to develop some of the characte [...]

    19. I ve just found this little Kindle Single on Unlimited from an author who s books I ve loved through the ghost story I read and others.I didn t realise that it was a part of the Simon Serrailller series But I don t think it matters if you hadn t read any of the series I found the book enjoyable and some stuff deals with stuff that you see every day A good short story with some twists and turns from a marvellous author who can certainly write brilliant novels I look forward to reading her Simon S [...]

    20. I read this short story because I was curious about the writer Susan Hill as I had heard plenty abut her, I can say I am not disappointed. The story is about a Gay Rights parade that gets held hostage and mayhem erupts as gay haters start terrorising those at the festival If I say any then the story will be ruined. There was a few problems I had, when the story had finished I felt short changed and wanted The detective was the run of the mill type that could have been cut and pasted into any nove [...]

    21. I purchase this book for free on audible The narrator get a fairly good job keeping the story entertaining and moving along I found the book to be too much of a short story, it s missing quite a few details that should be included in the storyline the book is about a new gang that hates gays and decides to attack their parade yes I know how corny that sounds and yes that really is the plot line Then all the sudden we have a major terrorist attack that had nothing to do with the original attack I [...]

    22. I did like the narrator s English dialect as well as the author s English phrases and vocabulary The story began with a cricket game I ve only read about that in Harry Potter The story did keep my interest It was short and interesting however, for a short story, the different crises were a bit disjointed to my liking Interesting to hear the mass murderer s take on motive and justification.

    23. Brilliant, my only complaint is that it was too short I read The Soul of Discretion before I picked up this Kindle single, so I wasn t sure if this was earlier in the series or later, but in the end I didn t care, I just couldn t believe my luck in getting to read two Simon Serrailler books in as many months.I was slightly disappointed in The Soul of Discretion, but this one restored my faith Susan Hill is a brilliant novelist and this is a brilliant series Can t wait for the next one.

    24. Short story in the series lled as between 7 and 8 but there were a couple of slight inconsistencies for it to have been in that spot Nothing that hurts the story just overall story arc relationships. As a short, it was fine her longer novels are better There s chance for character development and growth.

    25. It was an OK story It s a short story, so it s doable Much of the lingo is British, and for someone like me who hasn t traveled much, it was occasionally a bit difficult That said, it wasn t too hard to get the story It does leave you hanging a little bit I listened to it while working, so it kept my mind occupied for a little while.

    26. Classic Susan HillI love the fact that Susan Hill created both the woman in black and Simon Serailler so versatile and so skilled A great little story, satisfying, even whilst short, and terrible in the plausibility of the motive of the antagonist One of my all time favourite writers, and characters More Simon, please soon
