    1. 3.5Ethan Kaille, a former British solder and an ex con he was imprisoned because he took part in a ship mutiny , is hired by a Boston merchant to find stolen property He has to hide the fact that he is a conjurer too The retrieving job puts him at odds with another, successful thieftaker Sephira Pryce is an interesting character and I hope this is not the first and last time we see her. There is less magic in this story than in the first I ve read A Spell of Vengeance , but it s still good. You c [...]

    2. A tidy tidbit to set the hook into readers unfamiliar with Ethan Kaille or to feed the addiction to those already hooked Please excuse the mixed metaphors Just enough to draw the reader into the colonial Boston setting and atmosphere of the books.A good read.

    3. The Price of Doing Business is vignette than short story It provides an account of how Kaille met his archrival in the thieftaking business, Sephira Pryce Despite its brevity and limited plot, it was fun to return to Kaille s Boston in the years before the Revolutionary War I also enjoyed a return to Jackson s unique magic system, and even smiled the first time Uncle Reg appeared with the summoning Velamentum ex cruore evocatum, concealment conjured from blood.

    4. originally posted at thebookplank 2014One of my favourite ongoing series currently is the Thieftaker Chronicles by D.B Jackson From my first book that I picked up last year till the third book in the series, A Plunder of Souls which was released just a few months ago, this series has been a blast When I kicked off my Short Fiction Friday feature I has picked A Spell of Vengeance I was browsing the Tor original fictions and found to my pleasure yet another story of set in this series The Price of [...]

    5. The second in a series of intro stories for the later novels Well written and the plot seemed tighter than the previous story I am still not 100% sold on the blood magic presented in the story A nice period piece with a dash of magic tossed around in a crime world drama Certainly interesting and unique spoiler That said I really did enjoy the fact that despite all the lead character s seeming power, he was still put in his place by a normal person, a crime boss, a commoner with zero magic abilit [...]

    6. If you haven t read the Thieftaker novels which I highly recommend , this novelette is a good introduction to the world of Ethan Kaille, thieftaker detective and conjurer in Boston before the Revolutionary War The Price Of Doing Business tells how Ethan first met his nemesis, the beautiful and devious Sephira Pryce Author D.B Jackson read part of this story to us at his author reading at DragonCon 2013.

    7. I m not sure how much a fan I am of alternate histories, even if they include magic I m also not sure the danger of the Ethan vs Sephira conflict was really driven home Ethan seemed to have no trouble at all with protecting himself from both her and her minions. It was a nice little setup story though, and Uncle Reg seems interesting.

    8. Primer encuentro con Sephira, un personaje al que no entiendo del todo Pero de todos modos un buen relato, aunque hay ciertas cosas que me rayan un poco, como el contarte en cada historia el origen del protagonista, Ethan, y como funciona la magia

    9. Fun I haven t read anything by this author before and I really enjoyed this story I will have to read the full length novels now The premise of a thieftaker and a conjurer is intriguing.

    10. Nice short story in the Thieftaker world Gives background on Kaille s and Sephira Pryce s relationship, such as it is Also shows how Kaille might undertake a normal investigation.
