    1. I read this book when I was 14 Besides giving practical info on survival skills, etc it s primary message of lending respect and conservation to the remaining wilderness stay with me to this day.

    2. As some other reviewers noted, quite dense and particular about gear I don t mind, but I do suspect 12 years out some of the recommendations are getting long in the tooth I d love to see an update I read about 50% of this book altogether before it was due back at the library, and skimming the remainder suggested it wasn t as useful to me after that.

    3. Really interesting to see what has and hasn t changed about backpacking advice, gear, courtesy, medical care and the state of the wilderness in America.

    4. A guide to backpacking with minimal impact on the environment It covers the equipment and food needed for a backpacking trip.Medical hazards are also discusses There is a section of sources for information about the sport and trip areas.
