    1. This book was okay I liked it, but not nearly as much as I have liked Anne Mateer s other books The heroine just seriously annoyed me because she was so obviously making bad decisions Was she naive Or just stupid Maybe that s a bit harsh, but she was simply unbelievably gullible I couldn t relate to her at all And I have to say that the romance wasn t entirely convincing either.I did, however, really like the spiritual aspects of the story as well as the racing and history info Quite interesting [...]

    2. This was such an enjoyable read about trusting in the Lord and not placing your will and plans before His, and loving people for who they are.I haven t read many books set in this time period, and I really enjoyed it The automobile theme was pretty interesting I d have to say I liked this one even than A Home for My Heart , which I really enjoyed as well The two books are both in the same time period, but the setting, and social class are pretty much opposite those in Home for My Heart The plot [...]

    3. This was a very refreshing read From reading the description I almost expected one of those cliche books about a girl who breaks away from everything her parents want her to do, and then her parents end up seeing she was right That was NOT what this book is The first thing I was struck by in this book was that the main character is passionate about the Lord I haven t really read that many books where the characters are this on fire for the Lord It made me want to be like that myself Alyce is a [...]

    4. This book was another story that was not only well written, but had a powerful message, Mateer is one of my favorite authors.

    5. First I want to say this probably deserves a 3 1 2 but that isn t an option. My husband and I are big fans of NASCAR and having the history of the races talked about in a book was really interesting and unique I don t think I ve read a book with that as the backdrop before.I thought the main character had good intentions, but there is a cliche about good intentions I could understand her initial mistake, but it seemed that even though she was provided information talking about the character of L [...]

    6. Absolutely delightful story This is a library copy.I think that Alyce will be with me for awhile She is so real I wanted to shake some sense into her at times, and other times I was admiring her spunk The story is clever, the characters quite real, and the faith line is the core of the story and carries it to the end Very well done. This is a great read for everyone Squeaky clean of course , hard to put down Though it is first person narrative there is plenty of action The supporting characters ar [...]

    7. There were definitely some good and bad things about this book The good things were that she had a very strong main female character and a very strong villain One ting that I did not like about the main female character was that at times she seemed way too clueless Things that even I would figured out on my own One of the biggest things though was that there were was only one point of view, the main female character s view There were definitely some parts where I would have loved to see one of t [...]

    8. Anne Mateer s newest release, At Every Turn, is a whirlwind story of intrigue and love set against the background of the early stages of automobile racing in the United States.Alyce Benson is a young woman whose heart is on fire for God She also loves automobiles and speed The author combines these two elements to create a fascinating story world peopled with compelling characters, exciting plot twists and surprises until the very end. When African missionaries visit her church, Alyce is so moved [...]

    9. Passion for speed and a heart for missions combine in a turn of the century comedy I love the message of At Every Turn While I hope I am not as impulsive as Alyce, I know I have sought similar solutions to problems Perhaps you will also find yourself relating to her misdirected focus. Some situations seem to lend themselves to humorous complications, and Alyce is particularly adept at finding them The story is not all comedy, however, as problems arise which are not funny at all.I especially enjo [...]

    10. This was surprisingly enjoyable I m going to do this again in the list way DWhat I liked 1 The clothes Somehow, perhaps starting with the delightful Edwardian dress suit on the cover seriously, how gorgeous is the cover , the clothing and the Edwardian car driving costumes feel really got through, and I loved that The leather riding gloves Profesh looking yet feminine driving suits 2 The old fashioned cars D big grin 3 Webster was a lovely guy.4 I LOVED the grandma.5 The Edwardian atmosphere esp [...]

    11. Anne Mateer has officially made it to my favorite author list At Every Turn is a beautiful example of what makes her so great She has a smooth style of storytelling that can only be admired What I Loved I enjoyed the quirky heroine, Alyce Benson She was sweet, giving, and determined She had such a heart for missionary work that it was so easy to stand along side of her and root for her the entire time. The story is told through the first person so the reader is left to guess and determine the mot [...]

    12. At Every Turn was a fun and exciting read This isn t a time in history that I usually read, but I really enjoyed it and hope to read set in this era soon I loved reading how racing was so different back then and yet at the same time kind of the same Today there are very few women who are professional racers and I loved reading about a woman, who is from one of the wealthiest families, secretly racing The scenes with her driving were perhaps my favorite, they were described so well I could actua [...]

    13. As with Mateer s debut novel, my biggest gripe with this story is the 1st POV Once again, it is well done, but once again, I want I want to be inside Webster s head as he lets Alice drive his prized racing car Otherwise, I loved this book and the energy with which captures such a unique time in American history We need 20th Century historical fiction

    14. Monday, September 10, 2012At Every Turn by Anne Mateer, c2012Author, Anne Mateer Yay I was amazed at her spunk Her unassumingness I liked Alyce Benson right away Surprisingly, Alyce thinks her father will hand over her offer of commitment money He doesn t have the zeal and fortitude she has Goodness She sets out to earn the money herself After all, they need her Join Alyce in her adventure as she pivots around coming up with adventure than you could ever imagine possible for her Is she harebrai [...]

    18. A book about early auto racing usually wouldn t appeal to me since I am definitely not a fan of racing When I first picked up At Every Turn, I wondered how much emphasis would be placed on the racing aspect of the plot In the past, novels that focus too much on sports have not ranked among my favorites, but Anne Mateer s latest novel is an exception A very pleasing exception Mateer paints a unique vignette of the early 1900s There are parts of the plot that are predictable but as a whole, it is [...]

    20. It s not everyday that you read a book set in the early 20th century in which the heroine is a racecar driver at least I know I don t read them At Every Turn immediately caught my attention because even today it s a bit of a rare thing for ladies to race so to read about a proper young miss in 1916 doing it even though she s completely fictional sounded fun I am so glad I wasn t wrong in picking this book to read and review as it has proven to be both entertaining and interesting.Alyce Benson is [...]

    21. Once again, Anne Mateer has given us a strong and strong willed female character who you can t help but love Alyce Benson, moved by compassion for children in Africa, pledges 3000 dollars to the missionaries working in the Gold Coast One problem the money isn t hers to give, and her father is none too sympathetic to Christian causes She must find a way to raise the money on her own She uses the one skill she can driving Alyce begins competing in car races in Chicago and Indianapolis.Intriguing a [...]

    22. Ok, so I have another book I received in the mail, compliments of Bethany House This book is called At Every Turn by Anne Mateer The back of the book basically describes it as Alyce pledges money for mission work, thinking that her dad will give it to her She learns that she must earn the money on her own, and that is done by secretly racing a sports car in races with the help of her father s mechanic. At least that s the gist I got from reading the book First off, my overall impression of the bo [...]

    23. Alyce Benson leads a seemingly charmed life She s the only child of a wealthy man, and has no need to either work or find a husband to support her Her father freely gives her money whenever she asks, so she thinks he ll give her the three thousand dollars she pledged to mission work But Mr Benson doesn t approve of Christianity or of his money being used for Christian causes, and so he denies her request Alyce must find the money in just seven weeks, but gives away as much as she obtains through [...]

    25. One wild ride Alyce Benson is so moved by the stories of the visiting missionaries that she presumptously pledges three thousand dollars to their mission, and challenge the rest of the congregation to meet her donation But she meets an unforseen roadblock, her father refuses to give her the money, and now she must raise it all on her own And the only way that she can get the large amount is to use her God given talents and her love of speed Can she make everything right before everything spins w [...]

    26. Set in 1916, At Every Turn is a unique historical tale that s written in first person, told solely from Alyce s point of view I love first person writing, though it s somewhat uncommon in historical fiction.I wasn t able to completely connect with Alycee s likeable enough, but she occasionally seemed just a little bit too good Her personality is extremely impulsive, but at the same time she s very determined to meet her goal of raising 3,000 for missions These two traits come together to put her [...]

    27. In Anne Mateer s latest book, At Every Turn, the reader will find they are on a rapid race to see if Alyce can be many things A woman driver in 1916 when cars were new and women drivers virtually non existent A woman driver in a competitive automobile race when automobile racing was new and only males allowed A Christian with missionary zeal to help the unfortunate children and peoples of Africa when she is confronted with photographs and stories of them Compassion for people she meets who are i [...]

    28. Rating for plot interest and production 5 starsPersonal conviction rating 3 starsQuestions prodded me forward throughout this novel Would Alyce keep her zeal What if her father didn t provide the money Would the 6,000 be gathered and if so, how Was Mr Trotter all that he was cut out to be I appreciated the message that Mateer had throughout the story the continual reference to trusting God and the finale of Alyce realizing her sins and how she failed It was inspiring to read of her realization t [...]
