    3. If having read a number of works by nineteenth century Russian authors of the first rank such as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, you feel a desire to acquaint yourself with those of the second rank, you may want to consider Goncharov who has the virtues of being available in English and who is good enough in places to keep you hoping as you read along that he will somehow rise to the first rank which ultimately he does not.I found the Same Old Story to be vastly superior to Oblomov which is much famous [...]

    6. Since I loved Oblomov so much, my guy got me a copy of another book by the same author It s not nearly as wonderful as Oblomov I m not sure what could be, actually , but very enjoyable It s much shorter than the typical Russian novel, so that s something in its favor haha This author had quite an interesting ironic view of life, it seems Too bad he only wrote three books or maybe it s not so bad because who has time to read all these long Russian books even this short one had almost 300 pages of [...]

    7. More of a treatise on love than a common story indeed Prevalent throughout the story is the sympathetic undertones of the wisdom of the author, far from being dogmatic, as some of Russian authors of that period tended to be.A very concise book, plentiful of witticism and aphorism amidst a lifelong worth of heartbreakes and disillusionment, worthy of Wilde in his prime make this one of the most jovially morose Russian fictions i ve ever read so far.

    8. I desire nothing, seek nothing but peace, the slumber of the soul I turn to stone In this trance anything can happen, I see neither others nor myself I do nothing and do not notice the actions either of others or myself and I am at peace, I am indifferent There can be no happiness for me, and I will not succumb to unhappiness.Oh, for the love of Gutenberg, I need to find this.

    10. What a pleasure to read this carefully thought out yet occasionally surprising novel, The Same Old Story, a work considered prelude to the masterful Oblomov, but its secondary status is by no means evident during reading The new translation by Stephen Pearl manages to present natural English narrative and conversations while keeping the reader aware of the Russian setting and original language In a classic yet open ended way, the story unfolds of a wealthy and pampered young man s adventures in [...]

    11. This book was excellent Goncharov is a genius he gets human nature just right This book is very depressing leaving one feeling hopeless, helpless and cynical at the end I think many people go through the process of disillusionment, disappointment, and depression that the main character experiences as he gets older and is in touch with the real world This book explains the change in people from idealists to materialists, and makes one really think about the world I also really love the compariso [...]

    12. Ivan Goncharov s partly autobiographical first novel is the classic story of a boy who is spoiled rotten by his mother, and leaves his life of comfort in the provinces in hopes of achieving greatness in the big city But rather than finding instant fame, true love, and success in St Petersburg, Alexander Aduyev is shocked to realize he is not all that, after all Since he isn t capable of performing the slightest task by or for himself, this man child makes the mistake of looking to his uncle Pyot [...]

    14. One of the books that really make one reflect on your life I ve read it this year, and surprisingly found myself tracking similarities between my and Alexander s experiences Leaving the family nest and entering a new world of opportunities, possibilities, hopes and dreams is always exciting Yet it can also be life changing, especially at a young age It takes courage to be able to go through this process, and stay true to yourself, despite the possible disappointment or bitterness Alexander s pro [...]

    15. A young idealist leaves his hovering mother behind to go change the world, only to find the world less than eager to be changed Crushed at a couple of minor setbacks, he falls into a deep depression, and recovers only to become obsessed with money and material success. The story of one of today s special snowflakes No, it s Ivan Goncharov s classic 1847 novel about Alexander Aduyev, a young upper class Russian who goes to St Petersburg to find love and literary immortality, only to discover that [...]

    16. What I admire in this novel excellent portrayal of class and the demoralizing effects of wealth the damaging effects of the ideology of love the no win outcome for both sexes in a patriarchal marriage except, of course, that the husband gets to pursue his career, while the wife is bound What I wish were different often too heavily dialogue laden the two male protagonists nephew and uncle are overdrawn, less would have been and the aunt could have been used efficiently as a catalystIt is as if [...]

    20. An only child, twenty year old Alexander Aduyev has lived a life of privilege over indulged by Anna Pavlovna, his doting, widowed mother, and waited on hand and foot by her as well as the household servants Life has certainly been easy for him, although it hasn t spoilt his sweet, trusting and innocent nature However, having lived a country life, he now wants to spread his wings and move to St Petersburg He has no fixed idea of what he wants to do with his life, just that he wants to live a litt [...]

    21. I used to joke that prozac, if invented before 1800, would have wiped out the entire Romantic movement After reading Ivan Goncharov s serio comic novel, The Same Old Story translated by Stephen Pearl , I m convinced than ever than Romantics even if they produced great art could have used a little therapy Originally published in 1848, The Same Old Story, tells the tale of naive and Romantic Alexander Aduyev and his highly practice uncle, Pyotr, as they clash on how to live the best life and how [...]

    22. Well, well, well, who would have thought it Not a fan of the so called English classics and yet here I am having read and really enjoyed one of the Russian classics.Firstly the translation Always a bit dubious when it comes to reading books translated from the original into English as all too often I ve found the translation poorly done or is it that some words ideas humour simply doesn t translate well Whichever it is, I had no such concerns with this translation by Stephen Pearl, his mastering [...]

    24. The whole time I was reading this book I was facing two terrible extremes one is foolishly enthusiastic while the other one is cold till the limits of cruelty How many people come from the countryside to try their luck in a big megalopolis Big city has different values to which everyone should adapt for survival It took eight years for our hero to adapt to the capital life style, but was it worth it At the end we see him as a pale reflection of his uncle views He hasn t find new ideals for himse [...]
