    1. I really enjoyed this story In ways, it was like reading several books at oncea coming of age story about a disfigured young man, an environmental wildlife story about the bears in the Powhatan Swamp of North Carolina and some mystery thrown in for good measure.

    2. This is not a very popular book but it s one of my favorites Not only did I enjoy the mystery in the storyline but I also fell in love with the bears.

    3. This was a really, really good read I picked it up for sort of research purposes the setting is a swamp, as is my own WIP and was quite pleased at the premise Naturally, it s a bit hard for me to distinguish exactly how much of my reverence for it is due to its similarities to my own project, and how much is due to it simply being a good book Still, I CAN say with a good measure of assurance that this is a fine novel, and one I would have enjoyed even if I weren t writing what I m writing. The st [...]

    4. This YA novel from 1991 has some beautiful nature writing in it The plot is two kids, one terribly disfigured from a plane crash, become friends while mounting a nature conservation action and solving a pair of murders.

    5. This book was not as boring as I thought it would be It was a very suspenseful book filled to the brim with fright and mystery I could relate to many of the characters and some of the teenage troubles they have, just like I do This book was a very scary book filled with short and scary sentences, that really got to you The thing that I really liked was how the other was also able to incorporate long detailed sentences as well as the short detailed sentences If you re a fan of horror, mystery, or [...]

    6. This story is about a man named Chip Clewt, aka the weirdo, he is very scared from a fire and has burns all over him but he is very nice and very smart and knowledgeable of the swamp He has to protect Sam when she is chased onto his house I cannot relate to any of the characters in the book i did like this book and it was not bad but there where things that could of been changed to make it better I like the entire first part of the book.

    7. Anyone remember Battle of the Books in elementary school This was be only book I actually read for that lmao.

    8. This story is a young adult mystery, and a good one at that The book follows Samantha Sam Sanders as she falls in love with a half burnt teen her age named Charles Chip Clewt Together, they fight for the ban on hunting bears to be extended another five years But, the college student who was researching how many bears where in the swamp, Tom Teldford, goes missing without a trace Sam thinks a murder she saw the aftermath of as a five year old of a man named Alvin Howel, is connected. All in all, t [...]

    9. I had no expectations going into this book I had been browsing audio books at the local North Carolina library adult and young adult shelved together pulled this one out due to the title, read the description, and felt intrigued I had never heard of the author but the blurb from the Recorded Books series sounded as though he typically writes suspense for teens. As I began listening, I found the way he put together his words far beautiful than I had expected Perhaps because it was published in th [...]

    10. 1 I just got done reading The Weirdo The Weirdo is a really well done book The author manage to keep a suspens and mystery going through out the whole book To start with he made the sitting in a lovely neighbor hood , but jet the neighbor hood had a swamp closedby A girl named Samantha She was a typical girl a she had a pretty normal life, she went to school like every other person until she decided to go to the swamp one day, As she gets to closer to the swamp she incounters a dead body at the v [...]

    11. i think this book is okay i like the setting of it and the story about chip is really sad i like this book because it really gives the reader a great mental image of what s going on i like how everybody thinks chip is weird and a freak but if people got to know him they would find out that he s nice and means well i hate the fact that because everybody judges him he thinks that he has to live in the woods away from everybody while reading this book i got and into it I was happy when i read wha [...]

    13. I like how this book started right out with action when Samantha finds a died body off the road But what I really like is that it reminded me a lot of Ashe County with how the hunters and the people that want to stop killing of animals are always fighting with on another But then you meet the weirdo who has been hiding in the woods for years to hide his scared face from the public, he becomes on of the main supporters to stop killing of animals and to conserve the land And at the end Samantha an [...]

    14. I didn t really want to read this book, but since Ben needs to read it I thought I would The award Winner of the Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Mystery didn t inspire my enthusiam either, but I actually enjoyed the book and read it in two days Of course I spend hours on the couch holding a child so I had the time I suppose there was mystery involved, but for me the central focus was the relationship between the girl and the disfigured boy, as well as their individual and then joint relationsh [...]

    15. I decided to read this book because the cover of it intrigued me This girl when she was little went into the swamp and found a dead body I was very exited to read the story and was not able to put it down It was a about This girl when she was little went into the swamp and found a dead body Later, the girl was back in the swamp and a man that people call The Weirdo helped her safely to his house offering her food and drinks They ended up having a good relationship as friends This story has some m [...]

    17. While Taylor tries to tell a story about hunting rights by acknowledging both sides, the story clearly falls on the all hunting is wrong side While there are interesting facts about black bears, the story flows jerkily The murder mystery parts of the story could have been developed into a captivating novel, but combined with the emotional appeals to end hunting, this book was hard to enjoy as a coherent story It felt like a half researched lecture with a story thrown in to try to keep the reade [...]

    19. I honestly picked this book up for my younger brother, hence, the weirdo I must say though that the first few pages were completely drew me into the book and I could not put the novel down The book revolves around Chip Clewt, a burn victim and his overall struggle with self confidence, as well as a crime investigation over the murder of one man and the disappearing of another Overall, well written, however some parts were confusing and not explained well I rate it a 4 5

    20. 1 penguin readers 22 11 5 903 dead body found swamp secret meet man4 I like the scene som wondered a dead body which Sam found when she was child relate to missing person around Chip.5 This is story about a case of murder, conservation activity of bear and Chip s transformation Time series and main characters are diversified by chapter, so, it is little complicated to understand but story itself was interesting.

    21. I thought this book would be really suspenseful, considering the story was about a murder mystery I was a bit diappointed at the end however, there was nothing unpredictable that really made me go WOW But it was still a good and easy book to read just for heck of it, i mean the plot was still ok.

    22. YA book for July Finished in August It started out pretty slow and remained that way until about 50 pages before the end At that point, it got quite good there was action and suspense, and you actually could not put the book down The ending came too quickly, however, and was dissapointing in its simplicity.

    23. A very good older novel about an unlikely friendship and the search to find a killer This book is very mature and should probably only be used for readers that can handle a lot of text with a lot going on within it Middle schoolers may find it a little difficult, but an advanced reader will have no problem.

    24. Great story especially young men interested in hunting Story of a young boy who was disfigured living with his dad in a swamp not seeing anyone He finally meets and becomes friends with a college student who is studying the bear population in the swamp He then meet Samantha and together they fight for the bears rights Great mystery

    25. This book was really good I like how they made it like a murder mystery, but they still have like a message to get from book It is stand up for what you believe in and it doesn t matter what you look like I think everybody should read this book because it has a good lesson to get from it.

    26. This wasn t the mystery book I thought it was going to be, but I enjoyed reading about the fight for wildlife protection Taylor let the hunters tell their side of the story, too that s rare in books with environmental themes.

    27. Good mystery with an environmental and wildlife twist I read with my middle grades students and they enjoyed it However, it is not written in a chronological sequence, so it can be confusing for struggling readers.
