    1. Modern Sorcery was a nice surprise I liked it It is similar to Dresden Files only the main character is not a wizard Actually, he can t touch magic at all even though his parents were both magic users Fortunately, neither can it touch him Apparently the magic issue was a huge problem for his fianc e She concluded he can t give her children who could use magic So five years ago they broke up This was said in passing, but it rubbed me wrong. Now Naomi is back and she needs help Her father killed he [...]

    2. Jonathan Shade is a private investigator who finds himself embroiled in a whole lot of dangerous magic after his ex fianc e walks into his office and asks for his help While Shade is no stranger to magic in this world, magic users are the big cheese , but Jonathan has no magic of his own While that both hinders his fianc e is an ex because of his lack of magic , and helps he is immune to most magics , he soon realizes that the case Naomi brings to him is far dangerous that he was initially prep [...]

    3. Paranormal urban fantasies haven t really been to my taste lately I read far too many with my daughter, but this one was a nice change of pace It was well read by Joe Hempel. This is obviously part of a series, but the first book stood alone very well It s an interesting world, a bit like the Dresden series, but the MC has different sorts of powers There were many some were very magical, others complicated powerful, but the author kept them straight arranged logical limitations that he adhered to [...]

    4. Jonathan Shade is a paranormal detective with an immunity to magic Kelly Chan is his superhuman martial arts master partner Esther is his ghost secretary It s a cool blend of paranormal fantasy and noir detective mysteries One of Jonathan s old flames walks into his office and hires him for a case full of mystery, murder, and sorcery Luckily, Shade and his posse have the tools for the challenge in their other worldly wheelhouse. The pace of the novel was perfect for a busy body like me I listened [...]

    5. My original Modern Sorcery audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.Jonathan Shade is a private investigator with a twist he gets the cases with a paranormal twist to them Why He s good at it, he s the son of a powerful wizard family and while he does not have any magical powers of his own, he knows enough about it to solve mysteries When a husband enters a Colorado grocery store and hacks up his wife both of whom are parents to his ex fianc well, Jonathan has no choic [...]

    6. Excellent book all the way around Great combination of magic and wizards, a P.I who is the direct opposite of magical or wizardly, ghosts and martial artists with wicked senses of humor, and Charon the ferrywoman of the dead Sound like a strange combination Well it is, but all that and come together for an exciting, fast paced story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.I actually had the Audible version, having recently developed vision issues I ve listened to some books that put me to s [...]

    7. I grabbed this book as a free promotion from I read it after reading another book that was dripping with despair and needed something light to lift me up I am very glad I read it It was a very interesting book. This book should completely be classified as urban fantasy but it lacked werewolves and vampires, a complete win to me The novel reads like the old Dashiell Hammett detective stories only the customer is a wizard and the detective is immune to magic Jonathan consorts with a ghost and a mag [...]

    8. Let s start with the whole I received this book in exchange for a review but my opinions are my own shtick that is so popular these days Moving on, I have to say, I found Joe s narration of this book to be great I feel like he really captured Jonathan s voice, and even when I read things later unrelated to this book, I read them in his voice So in that way, I got to hear him narrate extra, which was cool.I really enjoyed the book overall Jonathan is hilarious and his jokes had me laughing out lo [...]

    9. Modern Sorcery Jonathan Shade 1 by Gary Jonas is a fun, fast, humorous fantasy that I loved from page one It has ghosts, wizards, an evil spirit, other entities, action, adventure, lots of fighting, humor, and a touch of romance, and did I mention humor This book has the hero, a PI, non magical, but works with magic folk He reminds me of Harry Dresden in some ways His partner, although a women, reminds me of Sandman Slim in some ways What a pair There is a murder of his ex flames parents and she [...]

    10. This one barely made three stars and that is mostly because it was interesting enough to finish.I liked the main character somewhat but mostly liked the ghost the best There were a couple of instances where characters acted out of character in order to serve the plot The bad guy seemed to be extremely dim witted and the ending was just too easy There was also one point where an extremely minor character was unnecessarily vulgar and it annoyed me enough that I kept thinking about it through the r [...]

    11. I could go 4 or 5 stars with this one Plotting, pacing and characters are all excellent This is good urban fantasy with some interesting characters and some unique features The overall feel is detective pulp fiction without wasting time having the main being a drunk thank you for leaving that tired cliche out There were a couple of magical features that weren t explained well I won t call them plot holes because while the abilities of the one guy not the main seemed pretty fluid, I don t believe [...]

    12. Not terribleI m not a huge fan of magic, sorcery, underworld type books, so this was a stretch for me The story didn t do it for me, Bute author did a great job of bringing out the personalities in each character There was a lot of dialogue, and you could easily tell who was talking and feel the attitude in their words The main character had a dry sense of humor that I liked.

    13. I had high hopes for this and if it were a TV show like Ash and the Evil Dead it would work fine The every sentence clever humorous banter thing works in visual comedy but here it just got tedious. There are obviously fans as there are a bunch of books by this author out there.

    14. Gary Gonas is my new addiction If you are waiting for the Harry Dresden new story, and are suffering without it Jonathan Shade is at least SO GOOD, or even better So, have a good journey through time, magic, and action

    15. Interesting beginning to the series and I am looking forward to the next one Definitely feels like a tribute to Jim Butcher s Harry Dresden, but stands on it s own The strong world building drew me in and intrigued me in spite of the love story.

    16. Modern Sorcery by Gary Jonas Set in modern day Denver, private investigator Jonathan Shade is hired by his ex girlfriend Naomi Miller to look into the murder of her mother Cathy by her own husband David Plenty of witnesses and the store camera all say there s no doubt as to how it went down However, Naomi won t rest until someone looks into the paranormal side of things Jonathan doesn t think there was any magic involved, but he hopes the case will give him a chance at getting back with Naomi As [...]

    17. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review So, yes, this idea is similar to the Dresden Files, in that the MC is a PI in a world full of magic I can even see either character slipping easily into either world to give the other a hard time That would be something to see. However, you can t expect it to stay so similar Jonathan is not Harry I see Harry as the old noir PI of course, he wears a trench coat and opens doors for ladies I see Jonathon as a guy I might have grown up with One [...]

    18. 3.5 Stars FULL REVIEW This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com, at my request.Jonathan returns to his office to find a client waiting Naomi Miller Who is also his ex who left when he asked her to marry him Naomi wants to hire Jonathan to find her father s innocence, for killing his wife and her mother There is solid evidence against David, but Naomi hopes Jonathan will find evidence of magic [...]

    19. This is a hard one to review I don t usually start off with the bad, but this is a tricky book to review and I want to leave it on a positive note, so bad first The plot was shaky It starts off solid, a good impossible mystery to solve which leads directly towards the Big Bad, but at the end, it sort of fell apart I did read another review somewhere where the reviewer stated that it was Johnathan Shade s friends who did all the work and I d have to agree On top of that, the writing needed editin [...]

    20. Set in modern day Denver, this urban fantasy audiobook kept me entertained with its eclectic characters and interesting storyline Jonathan Shade works as a PI who specializes in paranormal cases he himself can perform no magic, but to his advantage, this also means he is immune to all magic His side kicks are Esther, a ghost from the 1920 s who is attached to an old typewriter and Kelly, an engineered Sekutar warrior, who is also Shade s Martial Arts teacher When ex fianc e and wizard, Naomi, wh [...]

    21. Audio version I figured that was a d good start A thrill filled story in the world of wizards.Jonathan Shade is the son of two powerful wizards but has no magic himself, unless being able to see ghosts and being totally impervious to magic counts He runs a P.Iency He is still hopelessly besotted with his ex girlfriend, so when her father murders her mother then kills himself, she goes to Jonathan for help But she is not being completely honest with him there is an ancient and powerful sorcerer r [...]

    22. An entertaining take on the paranormal private investigator genre Our protagonist is a not quite hard boiled PI, with an unusual brand of magic in a world that seems to have as many magic users as there were vanilla humans Jonathan Shade is confident and capable, with a soft spot for his ex girlfriend When her mother is murdered by her father, she comes to him to ask that he prove that magic was used to make her father do it Shade is a good guy He tries to do the right thing He s full of snappy [...]

    23. I loved this book I couldn t put it down once I started I read all night long and then I borrowed my friend s kindle to finish it the next day since I didn t want to lug my lap top with me everywhere I needed to go But I would have if necessary I didn t want to stop reading, I had to find out what happened next There was a ton of great action, lots of funny banter, an amazingly evil villian, Gotta love those and a handsome, butt kicking, dynamic hero Gotta love those even But then let s not for [...]

    24. I have received this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.A husband kills his wife with a sword in a grocery store The case is apparently clear for the police, but Naomi, the couple s daughter, goes in search of Jonathan Shade, a private investigator, because she is convinced of her father s innocence One of the problems is that Naomi is Jonathan s ex fiance, who rejected him five years ago because Jonathan is incapable of doing magic. This is one of those urban [...]

    25. Modern Sorcery starts with Jonathan Shades, P.I is hired by his ex girlfriend, Naomi, to exonerate her father The case is bullet proof showing her father hacking her mother to pieces in the grocery store with surveillance camera Jonathan doesn t expect much into looking at the case As he started inquiring about the case, generic engineered assassins are sent to kill him Soon it became cleared that someone has released a dangerous and powerful wizard from the beyond.I started with the second book [...]

    26. Twisty Noir Magic FunI generally like urban fantasy books that try to meld noir conventions with magic and wizardry This one does a very good job on that score. The plot has lots of twists and turns, the femme is hot and devious, the hero is a quick thinking smartmouth with a handicap advantage, he can t use magic but he s also immune to its effects There s a great cast of villains and henchmen there are two excellent and entertaining side kicks and a bunch of stand up supporting characters Lots [...]

    27. A wonderful adventure Aww, this is a sweet and light listen, a mix between cozy and chick lit with fantasy and sorcery all in one The Jonathan Shade series evolves around a PI, who comes from a family of wizards, but he s not one himself Fortunately, he s is immune to magic, so other wizards can t do magic on him In book 1, Shade s ex fianc Naomi hires him to prove her fathers innocence, but Shade is not bying it However, in the hope of getting back together with Naomi, he takes the case and als [...]

    28. Jonathon Shade Where do I start Brought back from the dead and no magic Can see dead people but can t help them All his friends and enemies have a magic touch about them Only good thing he has going for him is that magic can not harm him in any way Not too shabby. He sets up shop in Denver which is heavily into wizards and the likes and has a secretary that can see if people are who they really say they are albeit, she needs a typewriter to do it An old girlfriend wants him to clear her Dad of th [...]

    29. Pretty good intro with a few slight flaws, the introduction to the character The novel kinds of drags, slightly, in places, but gives you enough to keep you invested and asking questions The Romance Anti Romance section is curious but the tell tale of the story is that is starts with an untold background, divulged over the first few chapters There isn t too much obvious about where the story is headed and the ending and it s entertaining enough and uses references in a proper fashion in a way th [...]
