    1. I had to read it 3 times in a row, it was that delightful The romance is perfectly built, getting deep into the psychology of both genders and showing how tormenting and why a relationship can be Besides, the best thing about it is that the love story is the territory in which the beliefs, the spirituality and the fate of the two characters are shown It is simply connected to everything in the book If you see it as separate, you miss on a lot It could be weird for reader who are not familiar wit [...]

    2. What was lost and is gone forever. The novel purports to be the diary of one John Angelos, a mysterious half Greek, half Latin participant in the final defence of Constantinople in 1453.The fall of Constantinople to the armies of Mehmet the Conqueror in May 1453 was a cataclysmic event Yet it has always surprised me how few in the west responded to the Byzantine call for help Mehmet s preparations were evident for a long time and the city was able to hold out for nearly two months It is an amazin [...]

    3. I don t think its as good as some of his earlier books, but to my opinion it gives an excellent picture of the absolutely weird network of the different intersecting interests during Constantinople s last christian days intersecting among the emperor, his prime minister, the muslims, the Genovese and the rest western soldiers etc etc This is the reason I consider it a very useful book for anyone interested to understand what really happend in Constantinople back in 1453.

    4. Moni on kehunut t t Waltarin teosta monilla ylisanoilla, mutta min en tyk nnyt ihan niin paljon kuin edellisist , mit olen kuunnellut Keskittyminen herpaantui v h n v li , vaikka sin ns ihan mielenkiintoinen asetelma.

    5. The story started with a romance that I didn t like, but it evolved into a powerful relationship between two people facing their fate and imminent destruction An empire totally betrayed by its allies trying to stand up and end in a heroic way is the core of this wonderful novel written by Mika Waltari I think that Sinuhe was powerful regarding words and scenes but the end of this novel reached the top in emotions I am Greek, so it spoke to my heart and I felt the agony of the last Greeks fighti [...]

    6. You know I really had to struggle through the first hundreds of pages as they felt so tedious However, now that I have finished the book, I really feel that this was one of the best reading experiences I ve had this year Finally Waltari managed to grow mature out of his war provoked childishness in writing Sinuhe the Egyptian and especially Mikael El Hakim This time he even bothered to use a bit different main characters as seen in the aforementioned books This is a historical novel at its best [...]

    7. Written as a journal in the first person of a French mercenary soldier, Jean Ange John Angelos , this was a vivid retelling of the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 preparation for the Siege, the Siege itself, and the aftermath To my mind, the love interest took up too much of the story This was all in all a fascinating glimpse into an often neglected piece of history.

    8. Sublime I was reading this book at the same time as another shorter simpler book, and this went down much faster Indeed the love story is the context in which everything is revealed why else would the book open with their unforgettable first encounter

    9. Ihmisen matka el m n haasteiden l pi, etsien totuutta t st el m st ja tuonpuoleisesta Johannes parka Masentunut, el m n raiskaama muukalainen, joka pakoilee itse n yht paljon kuin muut ihmiset h nt lokeroivat Ja taustalla kummittelee kaiken lis ksi vanhan aikakauden verinen loppu Kyll , t m kirja on eritt in masentava ja katkera kieless n, mutta se opettaa silti hyvin paljon ihmisyydest ja ihmisist niiden pimein ja valoisempina hetkin Mit n lopullista ja pitk kestoista opetusta tarina ei minulle [...]

    10. An interesting historical novel that was unfortunately burdened with a toilsome romance Well researched, though obviously tainted by a heavy reliance on Barbaro s chronicle, Waltari maintains his context and continuity well and, with one really exceptional case, does not step beyond the bounds of historical plausibility His knowledge of various figures is impressive though I remain doubtful of many of his characterizations, the motivations he provides for people in his world make sense given his [...]

    13. K sitt m tt m n hieno kirja kaikille 1400 1500 luvun Euroopan historiasta kiinnostuneille Tuttuun tapaan Waltari my s tutkiskelee ja pohtii p henkil idens kautta mm suhdetta naisiin, uskontoon, vallanhimoon, el m n paheisiin sek moraalista tasapainoa oikean ja v r n v lill Kirja on paikoin ultrav kivaltainen, ehdottomasti v kivaltaisimpia teoksia Waltarin laajassa historiallisten romaanien tuotannossa.Johannes Angelos osoittaa kerronnallaan Waltarin mittaamattoman laajan knoppitietovarannon ajal [...]

    14. Korkeiden ennakko odotusten takia lukukokemuksesta tuli pieni pettymys Varsinkin se soutaminen ja huopaaminen p henkil n romanttisessa suhteessa tuntui turhan junnaavalta Toki kierrokset nousivat loppua kohden, mutta alkupuolella olisi riitt nyt v hempikin pohjustus Waltarin historiallisten romaanien luku urakassani t m j i viimeiseksi, mik sekin ehk laski t m n lukukokemuksen vaikuttavuutta Esimerkiksi sodan kauhuista ja kaupungin tuhosta Mikael Karvajalan kuvaus Roomasta tuntui vaikuttavammalt [...]

    15. Pitk n tauon j lkeen sain vihdoin kirjan luettua loppuun Melko tasapaksua ja Waltariksi ep tavallisen tyls teksti kirjan loppupuolelle asti Rakkaustarina ei sytytt nyt ja Konstantinopolin muurit murtuivat aivan turhan hitaasti.Kirjan loppu on kuitenkin huikeaa Waltaria Niin hienoa teksti , ett henke pid tellen lukija ihmettelee, mit oikein lukee Waltari tekee taidetta, her tt henkiin ja kertoo ihmisyydest sen kaikista pimeimm n Usko jumaliin kuolee t ss kin kirjassa, mutta ihmisen loputun hullu [...]

    16. Takes place just before and during the Ottoman Empire s takeover of Constantinople I learned a LOT about this era that my college courses never really touched on As always, Waltari s main character is in the thick of battles, politics and But also as always, Waltari does a poor job of portraying women and there was a bit too much of the relationship aspect of the main character and his love interest.
